St Andrew man sentenced to life in prison

Twenty-nine-year-old labourer Andre Williams, who shot and killed his girlfriend in 2009 because she ended their relationship, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Williams, who is from Bull Bay, St Andrew, was also ordered to serve 35 years before being eligible for parole.

Sentencing was handed down yesterday in the Home Circuit Court by Justice Martin Gayle.

Williams was convicted last month of the murder of 22-year-old Trishauna Sewell.

The Crown represented by deputy director of public prosecutions, Maxine Jackson, and crown counsel, Kadiene Barnett, led evidence that the reason for the murder was obsession and jealousy.

In an unsworn statement from the dock which lasted five hours, Williams said he did not commit the crime.
