'Babsy' Grange begs for funeral grant increase

Member of Parliament for St Catherine Central Olivia 'Babsy' Grange is making a desperate plea for the labour and social security ministry to increase its funeral grants paid under the National Insurance Scheme.

Speaking in the House of Representatives yesterday, Grange said the high cost of funeral services was a major problem affecting many Jamaicans.

She said there were people who have been dead for more than six months in her constituency and have not been buried because their families cannot afford a funeral.

Grange said urgent consideration must be given to increasing funeral grants from $80,000.

Labour and Social security minister, Derrick Kellier, said his ministry is currently reviewing the rates paid to see whether adjustments can be made.

However, he noted that the funeral grant is meant to assist with expenses and not to cover the entire cost of funerals.
