INTERNATIONAL: China denounces Japan’s security strategy

Published: Saturday December 21, 2013 | 6:19 pm Comments 0

China has denounced Japan's new national security strategy, calling it a military expansion.

Japan announced this week that as part of the new security strategy, it plans to purchase advanced military equipment including drones and amphibious vehicles.

However, in a statement today, China’s Defence Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng warned that the move would increase tensions in the region.

Yansheng says China is firmly opposed to Japan's planned military acquisitions.

The development comes as Tokyo is embroiled in a bitter row with Beijing over islands in the East China Sea which both countries have claimed.
