Bermuda govít takes over cityís finances

Bermudaís Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy has taken over the finances of the city of Hamilton after the municipality was accused of a string of violations.

The move comes a week after a report tabled in the Bermudan Parliament cited several cases of mal-administration, including questionable expenditures and possible conflicts of interest.

Among the examples cited was an expenditure of US$2,319 on two suits, shirts and ties for Mayor Graeme Outerbridge.

The report was also critical of how a US$300 million waterfront development project was tendered, concluding that the process was heavily flawed.

Speaking during a press conference yesterday, Fahy called the decision to take over the municipalityís finances regrettable, but said it was made in the countryís best interests.
