Cops kill gunman in Port Maria

An armed gunman who allegedly tried to rob a policeman was shot and killed in St Mary early this morning.


The dead man has been identified as 19-year-old Gavin Patterson of Frontier Settlement, Port Maria.

The incident happened in the district of Bamboo Tree, close to Port Maria in the parish.

According to the police commander for the parish, Superintendent Dean Johnson, a constable, who is attached to a St Andrew North Police Station, was driving along the main road when two men tried to rob him.

Superintendent Johnson further said the constable confronted the gunmen and a police patrol was quick on the scene to assist him.

The gunmen reportedly fired at the police team and fire was returned.
According to Superintendent Johnson, Patterson, who was reportedly wearing a mask, was shot and a nine millimetre pistol with five cartridges taken from him.

He said the incident has been reported to the Independent Commission of Investigation.
