T&T's energy ministry probes oil spills

Published: Saturday December 28, 2013 | 6:43 pm Comments 0

Trinidad and Tobago’s energy ministry said a probe into the source of this week’s oil spills is continuing.

The ministry said it is reviewing a preliminary report from the Institute of Marine Affairs on fingerprinting analysis of samples from the affected coastline in La Brea and Pointe-a-Pierre.

It said evidence from the preliminary report indicates that the oil sample is Bunker C type oil, meaning a product of the crude refining process.

Of 11 beaches on the southern coast, clean-up efforts on seven are more than 80 per cent complete.

While one beach was not impacted, two had no visible oil on the shoreline and another is five per cent complete.
