A 27-year-old detective was shot and killed by a suspected robber, after escaping police custody at the Georgetown Public Hospital in Guyana.

In a statement the police said Corporal Seburn Elias was shot in the abdomen during a scuffle with the man on Monday night.

The police say the incident happened while the policeman attempted to retrieve a firearm from the suspect.

They say the accused man had earlier managed to escape from police custody after disarming a policeman at the hospital.

The Guyanese police say they have since launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the suspect’s escape and the subsequent killing of the detective.
