Mutual Gallery calls for under-40 artists

The Mutual Gallery and Art Centre Ltd has launched an under-40 art competition.

Dubbed the Super Plus Under-40 Artist Of The Year Competition, the contest aims to promote new developments in Jamaican contemporary art.

The competition is open to resident and non-resident Jamaican artists and non-Jamaican artists residing in Jamaica for the last three years. Artists must be 40 years or under on August 8. Previous prize-winners of the Jury and the People's Prizes are eligible to enter the competition.

The competition is open in the following media: painting, sculpture, installation art, ceramics, photography, video art, collage, printmaking and fibre art. Photographs should be clearly labelled with the artist's name, title of the work, medium and direction.


To qualify, artists are invited to submit a portfolio of past work in print form or on CD showing a minimum of 15 works, a biography or résumé and a proposal outlining the project that will be submitted for the competition.

The portfolios must be submitted to The Mutual Gallery by Monday, April 4 at 4 p.m.

A five-member jury will judge the entries. The competition/exhibition opens August 12.

The announcement of the winner(s) will be made on September 5.

Cash Awards: Each pre-selected artist will receive a selection grant of $10,000 when submitting their work. The Jury Prize of $100,000 will be awarded to the artist judged by the jury to have made the best overall submission. The winner of the Jury Prize will be offered a solo exhibition at the Mutual Gallery in 2012. A grant of $50,000 will be paid by Super Plus towards the staging of the exhibition. The artist voted by the public to have made the best submission will receive the People's Award valued at $50,000.
