Church must not lose sight of Gospel mission

Published:Friday | July 11, 2014 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I applaud the public stance taken on June 29, 2014, by my fellow Jamaicans from Christian denominations and other religious persuasions against sexual immorality in every form.

However, I urge the Church to recall our Lord's charge to be and to make disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. Reaching out to those in need of salvation is paramount. We can only be effective vessels of the Gospel if we remind ourselves daily that every human being is a sinner who can only be saved by the unmerited favour of Christ.

Clothing ourselves in humility and compassion is the key to our mission. We must eliminate from our conversations and utterances even the slightest hint of bravado/combat (us against them), contempt/disgust, and ridicule (Adam and Steve jokes, etc).

As long as our rhetoric continues to be influenced by these mindsets, we will fail to be part of His mission to seek and save the lost. May He cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
