Wimbledon Round Up

Swiss star Roger Federer got his bid for a sixth Wimbledon title off to a good start with a straight-sets first-round win over Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei.

Federer opened proceedings on Centre Court in the absence of injured defending champion Rafael Nadal.

And despite dropping serve early on, the world number two came through 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 in one hour 44 minutes.

Federer, who is trying to win a record 15th Grand Slam title, will play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in round two.

Meanwhile, American James Blake was the first men\'s seed to fall on the opening day as Italian Andreas Seppi recorded a 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 victory.

Also advancing were Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who beat Andrey Golubev, Robin Soderling, who beat Gilles Muller and Karol Beck, who beat Feliciano Lopez.

In women’s first round actions, two Two-time champion Serena Williams defeated Portuguese qualifier Neuza Silva, 6-1, 7-5 and Russia\'s Maria Sharapova fought hard to see off Viktoriya Kutuzova 7-5, 6-4.
