Russia\'s Elena Dementieva and Serbia\'s Jelena Jankovic became the first big name casualties at the US Open.

Fourth seed Dementieva lost 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to American Melanie Oudin, who survived a thigh injury in the third set to close out a famous victory.

Fifth seed Jankovic, a finalist last year, lost a thrilling encounter against impressive Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-7, 7-6.

In another game, top seed Dinara Safina Russia came through another shaky match to reach the third round with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kristina Barrois of Germany.

Other women winners were Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Nadia Petrova of Russia.

In the men’s draw, Spain\'s Fernando Verdasco brushed aside Florent Serra of France to set up a third-round clash with Tommy Haas.

Tenth seed Verdasco, who claimed his first ATP World Tour Title in New Haven last week, defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-0, 6-3 in less than 90 minutes.

German Haas converted just two of 18 break points but the 20th seed won 6-4, 6-4 7-6, against American Robert Kendrick.

Fourth seed Novak Djokovic takes on Carsten Ball later while Andy Roddick plays Marc Gicquel.
