US Open Round Up

Former champion Kim Clijsters of Belgium upset third seed Venus Williams of the USA 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 in a dramatic fourth-round match at the US Open yesterday.

Clijsters held her nerve to win encounter and booked her place in the last eight. It was just her third tournament back after two years away during which time she gave birth to her first child.

Li Na of China will be Clijsters’ opponent in the last eight.

However world number three Rafael Nadal played through pain to beat fellow Spaniard Nicolas Amago 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 and stay in the hunt for his first US Open title.

Juan Martin del Potro and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga both won in straight sets.

Fifth seed Del Potro of Argentina defeated Austria’s Daniel Koellerer 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 while seventh seed Tsonga saw off fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau 7-6, 6-2, 6-4.
