Federer wins 38th straight match

Number One Roger Federer of Switzerland has won his 38th straight match at the US Open, moving into the quarterfinals with a victory over Number 14 Tommy Robredo today.



Federer, in search of his sixth straight title at Flushing Meadows, split the first 10 games against his Spanish opponent, then won 14 of the next 18 for a 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 victory. He was off the court in one hour, 48 minutes.



His next match will come against Number 12 Robin Soderling, whom he beat in straight sets earlier this year in the French Open final to complete his career Grand Slam.



Soderling advanced when Number eight Nikolay Davydenko retired with a leg injury at the start of the fourth set.



In women’s action Melanie Oudin extended her remarkable run to the quarterfinals with another come-from-behind victory.



She defeated 13th-seeded Nadia Petrova 1-6, 7-6, 6-3.



In other women\'s matches today, Kateryna Bondarenko and Yanina Wickmayer won to set up a quarterfinal between two players ranked in the 50s.
