The Surinamese army said measures are being implemented to prevent a possible flood of illegal Brazilian gold miners from neighbouring French Guiana.

This follows the recent announcement by authorities that actions will be taken against the illegal operations.

The miners are being blamed for rapid deforestation and polluting rivers with mercury.

Surinamese Defense Minister, Ivan Fernald said the National Army drafted a plan on how to address the situation, if miners try to cross the border.
