John Jackson of the US Virgin Islands booked a ticket to the Beijing Olympic Games yesterday at the International Boxing Association Olympic Qualifiers in Trinidad and Tobago.

Jackson advanced after qualifying for today’s final of the men’s welterweight class. He outclassed his Brazilian opponent Pedro Lima for a 19-10 win on points.

Jackson is the only English-speaking fighter left in the qualifiers.

He will meet fellow Olympic qualifier Cuban Carlos Suarez, who beat Mexico’s Oscar Molina, 19-4.

Four Jamaican boxers took part in the qualifiers, but were all outclassed in the first round.

Fighters who failed to secure an Olympic spot at this tournament will have two other chances to do so over the next four month.

The first of those qualifiers will take place in Guatemala.
