Hosts New Zealand shrugged off the absence of paceman Shane Bond to reduce Pakistan to 161-6 on a rain-shortened opening day of the second Test in Wellington.

Skipper Daniel Vettori took 3- 42 and Bond’s injury replacement Daryl Tuffey 2-32 to restrict Pakistan.

Umar Akmal top scored for Pakistan with 46, while opener Imran Farhat chipped in with 32.

Pakistan had made three changes to the team, which lost in Dunedin. Salman Butt was in for Khurram Manzoor, Fawad Alam was axed for Misbah and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria replaced off-spinner Saeed Ajmal.
