More than 40 passengers of American Airlines flight 331 had to be rushed to hospital late last night after their plane crashed at the Norman Manley Airport.

The incident happened about 10:25 when the Boeing 737 flight coming from Miami overshot the runway in pouring rain, burst through a fence and crashed near the Port Royal Beach.

The national security minister Dwight Nelson, the Transport Minister Mike Henry and the minister with responsibility for information Daryl Vaz were early on the scene.

It’s understood that the plane broke into several pieces on impact.

Up to late last night, airline officials were searching for the flight data recorder.

One customs official reported that passengers were visibly shaken by the crash.
