Warrican bowls young WI to dramatic win

Left-arm spinner, Jomel Warrican produced a spectacular three-wicket burst and lifted West Indies to a four-run victory over Ireland in their International Cricket Council Under-19 World Cup warm up match in New Zealand today.

Electing to bat in a match reduced to 42 overs per side, West Indies Under-19s posted 187 for 9 with Shane Dowrich topscoring with 37.

He got solid support from Trevon Griffit 34, Evin Lewis 32 and Jermaine Blackwood 32.

Set a victory target of 187, Ireland suffered a dramatic late collapse to be bowled out for 183 in 41.3 overs against the bowling of Warrican 3 for 33 and Nicholson Gordon 2 for 24.

Meanwhile, two of the Caribbean side’s first-round opponents, Pakistan and Papua New Guinea suffered losses and Bangladesh, their third opponents in the group phase, recorded an upset win over Australia.

Pakistan lost by 10 runs to South Africa and the USA easily defeated Papua New Guinea by 116 runs.

Bangladesh defeated the defending champions by 20 runs.

West Indies will start the Under-19 World Cup against Pakistan on Friday before facing Bangladesh on Sunday and Papua New Guinea next Tuesday in their remaining Group ‘D’ matches.
