The administration of the Tredegar Park All Age school in St Catherine is concerned that the upsurge of violence in the Tredegar Park community is adversely affecting students at the institution.

On Tuesday, classes were suspended at the school after rival gunmen shot at each other in the community.

The senior guidance counselor at the school, Edris Ffrench said no classes were held yesterday as the continued shooting prevented access to the school.

Ms Ffrench said only 50 of the 700 students turned out for classes today.

She said members of the Peace Management Initiative have since visited the school and a team from the trauma unit of the Education Ministry is expected shortly.

Additionally Ms Ffrench said the police have been patrolling the community and have provided support to the staff and students at the school.
