A police corporal attached to the St. Andrew South Division remains hospitalized in a stable condition after he was shot and injured last night.



The policeman was wounded in a robbery attempt in Sheffield, Westmoreland.



A gunman, identified as 26 year-old Kevin ‘Quallo’ Clarke was also killed and a businessman injured during the incident.



According to the police, around 7pm the gunman who is from the Bridge district in Westmoreland, entered a supermarket and demanded money from the proprietor. When his demand was not met he shot and injured the businessman.



It is reported that the policeman who was in plain-clothes, challenged the gunman and during an exchange of gunfire both he and the gunman were shot.



Several residents who gathered on the scene reportedly chopped the injured gunman who later died.
