Portia speaks out on PSC

Leader of the Opposition, Portia Simpson Miller has responded to the dismissal of the members of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

She said she hoped that on reflection, the Prime Minister would have reconsidered his position and withdraw his recommendation for them to be fired.

Mrs. Simpson Miller indicated that, the necessary steps will be taken to prevent what she regards as a serious assault on the foundations of constitutional arrangements.

She also said the Civil Service must be kept free from partisan political interference and influence.

The Governor General acting on the advice of the Prime Minister dismissed the members of the PSC this week.

Despite the dismissals, Mrs Simpson Miller said the Governor General is still to act on the recommendation of the PSC, which he received weeks ago to appoint Professor, Stephen Vasciannie as Solicitor General.

According to Mrs. Simpson Miller the revocation of the appointment of the PSC does not nullify the recommendation made by the commission.
