First persons charged under Cyber Crime Act
Two men are booked to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to answer to charges under the Cyber Crime Act.
The men who were arrested on Friday are the first to face charges under the Act which was passed last year.
The police high command says their arrest stemmed from an investigation which started on Saturday, August 28.
According to the police, around 9.30 a.m. on that Saturday, the accused men were seen acting suspiciously in a motor car in front of an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in Manchester.
The men and the vehicle were searched and electronic devices which are use to intercept transactions and to duplicate the personal identification number and other personal information of customers using the ATM were found in the car.
The police say the devices are used to capture customer information in order to make a duplicate card which is then used to withdraw monies from accounts without the owners’ knowledge and permission.
The men were then charged under sections 3, 6 and 8 of the Cyber Crime Act.
