The proposal to remove security guards from the minimum wage payment system to a negotiated salary settlement is among the issues down for discussion at a meeting of the Labour Advisory Committee on Wednesday.

The labour minister ministry has made the proposal to the Minimum Wage Advisory Commission for the new payment model for security guards.

According to labour minister Pearnel Charles, several security guards perform duties carrying risks similar to those performed by policemen.

But he says unlike the police, security guards are being paid under the Minimum Wage Act.

The president of the National Workers Union, NWU, Vincent Morrison has welcomed the proposed change.

But he says the Jamaican Government first needs to ensure that a unit is in place to protect security guards and bargain on their behalf since they currently do not have unions.
