Samuda on EPA

The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Karl Samuda, said Jamaica will benefit from the new Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which has been signed with the European Union.

He says the agreement, which allows Caribbean countries to export certain items to Europe duty-free, will be especially beneficial to the banana and services industry.

Mr. Samuda added the agreement does not offer greater levels of traditional protection in the European market. He said that suppliers of goods and services must be more competitive in the European and other markets.

The president of the Jamaica Exporters Association, JEA, Marjorie Kennedy, said the EPA could have a slightly negative effect on the country’s economy.
