Banana Board calls on farmers to register

The Banana Board Limited is appealing to farmers of the staple crop to register under the Banana Industry Catastrophe Fund.

The fund was set up in 2007 to assist with the speedy recovery of the island's banana industry from the effects of natural disasters.

General Manager of the Banana Board Janet Conie says applications for registration are now being accepted.

However, she says in order to be eligible to benefit from the fund farmers must grow banana or plantain for sale and have at least 500 roots of the crop.

Conie says the Board paid out $10 million to banana and plantain farmers following Tropical Storm Nicole in September last year.
