A security guard remains in hospital in critical condition this afternoon after he was shot and wounded on the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies.

The incident occurred just before 2pm.

It’s reported that the security guard was shot in the abdomen after he was involved in an altercation with two armed men on the campus.

The men were reportedly running towards the Bank of Nova Scotia branch on the campus at the time of the incident.

It is reported that the police have ruled out robbery as a motive.

Investigators said the men are linked to gangs from August Town, Goldsmith Villa and the Mona Commons community who are in conflict over construction work on the campus.

Three men were held on the campus shortly after the shooting and a firearm taken from one of them.

Deputy Principal at the Mona campus Joseph Pereira says security measures have been stepped up on the campus following the shooting.
