Pensioners to recieve arrears
As of February next year 14,000 National Insurance (NIS) pensioners will begin to receive pension arrears.
The arrears in some instances will be retroactive to 2001.
The total sum amounts to $ 400 million, and will be paid from the NIS Fund.
Labour and Social Security Minister, Pearnel Charles reported today that Cabinet approved an amendment to the National Insurance Act.
This will enable the payment of arrears of up to three years.
Mr. Charles said the government has changed the timeframe for claiming pension benefits from 12 months to 3 years.
He told the House that the period for claiming employment injury benefit has moved from 10 days to 6 months.
