The Government has made another step to make it compulsory for the names of fathers to be on their children’s birth certificates.

The central Kingston Member of Parliament, Ronnie Thwaites, has been lobbying for it to be mandatory for the names of fathers to be on their children’s birth records.

Yesterday, Daryl Vaz, the minister with responsibility for information announced that the Cabinet has now approved changes to the law to make it happen.

He said a penalty will be imposed on mothers who falsify information or refuse to give details of their child’s father in the registration process.

Vaz said if the mother is unable to disclose the father’s name, she would have to provide the reason on the appropriate section of the birth registration form.
