Wikileaks disclosures may change US, Ja relations - Martin Henry

Published:Sunday | May 22, 2011

Confidential information exposed by Wikileaks may change diplomatic relations between the United States and Jamaica, says political commentator Martin Henry.

Mr. Henry’s comments follow reports by The Sunday Gleaner, quoting from disclosures by Wikileakes, which highlighted the United States’ displeasure with the Government’s treatment of recent extradition matters. The leaks also highlight the US Government’s impression of other political issues such as the dual citizenship dilemma.

He says diplomats may have difficulty performing their duties in the future as a result of the leaked information.

The leaks published in today’s Sunday Gleaner reveal the United States’ annoyance with the Golding Government’s response to the extradition request for Christopher “Dudus” Coke. It also alleges that the Government was told about the request for the extradition of Mr. Coke by the US months before it was officially submitted.

In addition to the Government, the leaks published in today’s paper allege that St. Catherine, South Central Member of Parliament, Sharon Hay Webster sought to withdraw the renunciation of her US citizenship four days after making a formal attempt to give up her rights as a US Citizen.
