Portmore toll fees announced
By Kenrick Josephs
Transport Minister Robert Pickersgill has announced the much anticipated toll rates ranging from $40 to $200 for use of the Portmore Toll Bridge, which opens on July 13.
Minister Pickersgill said there will be frequent users package discounts for all categories of users.
Non-frequent users of the Portmore Toll Bridge traveling in motor cars (class 1) will pay $60.
However frequent users with electronic tags will pay $50 for first 10 trips of a week while each additional trip for that week will cost $40.
Frequent users, driving class 2 vehicles, mainly Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV) will pay $90 while non-frequent users will pay $100. Larger vehicles (class 3) such as buses will see frequent users paying $180 and non-frequent paying $200.
The residents of Portmore, who will be forking out more cash to pay these toll fees, are rejecting the announced rates as they were expecting a maximum fee of $30.
Jamaica Labour Party Spokesman on Transport, Mike Henry has also said the cost is unfair and the government could have made the fees cheaper.
