The Ministry of Education is being urged to ensure that schools are adequately prepared to provide access for children with disability.

Addressing the closing session of a two week special education institute at the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) head office in Kingston yesterday, the teachers urged the ministry to make this a priority for the start of the new school year.

Institute co-coordinator and chair of the JTA’s special education committee, Dr. Polly Bowes Howell says for too long children with physical and other challenges have been denied access to particular institutions due to the lack of proper access.

She says efforts will be made to have this matter fast tracked during the summer break.
