St. Jago High students released, calm in Rivoli

St. Jago High School students were released following a gun battle between police and gunmen in the St. Catherine community of Rivoli.

The students were gathered in the auditorium on the school's compound, next to the community, which is located outside the parish capital of Spanish Town as gunfire continued.

The shooting had been ongoing for nearly three hours, according to Senior Superintendent Winchroy Budhoo.

He said it started after a group of gunmen engaged the police in a shootout, near St. Jago High School, on Monk Street in Spanish Town.

The following is a timeline of reports reaching The Gleaner:

4:45 pm - As the police tried to maintain calm, residents came out into the streets and accused the police of tear-gassing.

4:30 pm - Gunfire continues in Rivoli, St. Catherine.

4:22 pm - Principal Sandra Swyer-Watson said students were traumatised. She said some fainted.

4:21 pm - Shots are being fired again.

Students were released.

4:00 pm - In a bid to escape the police, the gunmen ran on to the school compound. Update: Reports reaching The Gleaner are that the gunmen escaped.

3:40 pm - Gunshots have been fired for more than a hour. Strong police and military presence. A Jamaica Defence Force helicopter hovers.
