Improved work permit system coming
Labour Minister, Pearnel Charles, says effective January 1, 2008, foreigners already in Jamaica will not be able to apply for work permits.
Mr. Charles says the move is aimed at preventing foreign workers from filling positions for which there are qualified Jamaicans.
He says persons who employ foreigners without permission will be fined up to one million dollars while the employee will be fined between 250 and 500 thousand dollars.
Both persons could face imprisonment for up to six months.
On October 17, the Labour Ministry gave illegal foreign workers 10 days to apply for work permits.
Mr. Charles says there has been a significant increase in the number of applications since then.
