The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, ODPEM, says there has been significant improvement in the air quality around the Riverton City Landfill where a fire has been burning for several days.

Director General of ODPEM Ronald Jackson says for the most part, the fire has been put out, but warns that there are still smouldering in several areas.

Jackson says that this could produce more smoke over sections of the Corporate Area due to windy conditions expected this afternoon.

However, he says, the smokey conditions are not expected to be as bad as they were when the fire started on Wednesday.

The fire has been wreaking havoc for businesses and residents in close proximity to the landfill.
