Sugar workers to get a boost

Minister of Agriculture Roger Clarke has indicated that the government will be moving to offer greater assistance to sugar workers and farmers.

Clarke has disclosed that about $1 billion is to be made available in the 2012 -2013 Budget to embark on initiatives to help mitigate the fallout from privatisation of the sugar industry.

Among the projects to be undertaken are the relocation of sugar barracks and infrastructure improvements in farming areas.

The agriculture minister says the Cane Expansion Fund is to receive an injection of $1.75 billion.

But Clarke says the allocations for the sugar sector will be dependent on Jamaica reaching an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

A high-level Jamaican delegation is now in Washington holding talks with the IMF on securing a new medium-term programme.
