The police traffic division this morning began a clampdown on robot taxi operators in the Kingston Metropolitan Region.

Head of the police traffic division, Senior Superintendent Radcliffe Lewis, said the operation will target illegal transport operators who ply the Duhaney Park, Papine and Constant Spring to downtown Kingston routes.

Illegal taxi operators travelling from Papine to Half Way Tree and Mountain View to Half Way Tree will also be targeted.

According to SSP Lewis, many illegal operators acquire rural transport licenses, but operate on routes within the Corporate Area.

SSP Lewis said the operation is one of several initiatives to regulate the transport industry.

According him, the Transport Authority will outline other initiatives at a later date.
