Bunting orders review of police operations

Published:Tuesday | March 6, 2012

National Security minister, Peter Bunting has requested that the police commissioner review the planning and conduct of operations following a number of police killings in recent days.

He says such a review is needed to ensure the risk to the public is minimised.

Bunting has reiterated that it is the policy of the Government that the police only use deadly force if it is justified and necessary.

In relation to yesterday’s killing of six persons in West Kingston, the national security minister says police reports received so far indicate that dangerous criminals had been killed in the incident.

He says this is based on the number of firearms recovered by police and the fact that preliminary identification of at least three of the victims, shows that they were wanted for serious crimes including murder.

In the meantime, Bunting says he is saddened that it appears that at least two victims may have been innocent persons caught in the crossfire between the police and criminals.
