Two of the country’s major taxi associations are distancing themselves from a call by the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) for an increase in taxi fares.

The National Council of Taxi Association (NCOTA) and the Route Taxi Association of Jamaica (RTAJ) say they are not in support of an increase in taxi fares at this time.

The associations are seeking to make it clear that head of JATOO, Edgeton Newman does not speak on their behalf.

President of the RTAJ, Sophia Campbell said the associations are cognizant of the hardship faced by commuters and any move to advocate for an increase in fares would be after all other options have been exhausted.
