Triple Olympic Gold Medallist and world record holder, Usain Bolt and double Olympic Gold Medallist Veronica Campbell Brown have been appointed as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Champions for Sport.

The Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Olivia “Babsy” Grange, said the information was communicated to her by Director General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura.

In a letter, Matsuura said the athletes’ achievements have helped to show the limitless potential of small island developing states and their ability to compete on a global scale in a variety of endeavours.

He said Bolt and Campbell Brown both possess the sporting prowess, values and ethics that discern UNESCO Champions for Sport.

Grange said a recognition ceremony would be held during the impending celebrations for the country’s Beijing team next month.
