New Parliamentary year opens
The new Parliamentary year began this morning with Governor General, Sir Patrick Allen, warning that there will have to be bold new steps this year.
According to Sir Patrick, the Government is expecting that the International Monetary Fund in collaboration with other multilateral partners will be supportive, to achieve the country’s medium term objectives for economic growth and protection of the poor.
He said the Government will implement a tax reform programme to widen the tax base and ensure better compliance and enforcement.
At the same time, Sir Patrick said emphasis will be placed on energy.
The Governor General also addressed the issue of crime, one of the factors believed to be restricting investments and hurting Jamaica’s development.
According to Sir Patrick, the country cannot relax now.
