Scrap metal dealers meet today

Published:Thursday | September 6, 2012

The Scrap Metal Federation is expected to meet this afternoon with the Industry Minister, Anthony Hylton, to continue talks with the view to reopen the scrap metal trade.

An executive member of the federation, Rohan Brown confirmed that the meeting is slated for 2.30 p.m.

It is expected that the group will get an update on the inspection of the regional loading sites they had proposed as an interim measure to facilitate the immediate resumption of the trade.

The ministry had committed to inspecting those sites to determine if they are suitable.

Hylton is expected to make a submission to the Cabinet if he decides to go along with the Federation’s proposal.

The trade was banned last year under the Jamaica Labour Party administration but Hylton has said he’s not opposed to its re-opening, but under stricter terms and conditions.

His ministry has proposed a central processing and loading site as a key component to the reform and regulation of the industry.
