Alcohol and tobacco among substances most abused by Jamaicans

Two legal and easily accessible substances have become a growing cause for worry, having been listed as the substances most abused by Jamaicans.

According to the National Council on Drug Abuse, alcohol and tobacco are among the top three most abused substances in Jamaica.

Marijuana is the third item on that list.

And at a Gleaner Editors’ Forum earlier today, the Executive Director of the Council, Michael Tucker, said research has shown that the age of first time users is getting lower.

Tucker says marijuana in particular poses a problem for the council.

He says it’s difficult to deal with marijuana use because it’s supported by myth and is often presented as hip to the country’s young people by popular artistes.

But Tucker says the agency recognises that if it’s proactive it can delay the experimentation with dangerous substances.
