UPDATE: Bullet lodged in chest of cop shot in New Kingston

Published:Monday | December 10, 2012

The plain-clothes police constable who was shot in his chest following an attempted robbery in New Kingston this afternoon has been stabilised in hospital.

However our sources say his condition is still considered serious and the bullet remains lodged in his chest.

It is also reported that the bullet damaged the cop’s liver.

"I was here when the plain-clothes policeman said 'Police! Stop!' when the gunman spun around and shot him in the stomach," a bystander said.

The constable who was attached to the Band Division was shot and injured on Chelsea Avenue.

According to reports, the policeman was apprehending men who had allegedly robbed a business place in the area when he was shot.

The incident forced police investigators to close Chelsea Avenue and Dominica Drive as they processed the crime scene.

The road closures resulted in huge traffic pile ups in the afternoon peak hour as motorists jostled to use the alternative routes.

Up to a short while ago the Constabulary Communication Network reported that the roads were still closed.
