Work permit changes announced

The Minister of Labour, Pearnel Charles, says starting this month there will be some changes to the current work permit system.

Mr. Charles says these changes will be implemented and enforced in a bid to prevent foreign workers from filling positions that many Jamaicans are qualified for.

He says employers will be fined up to one million dollars if they fail to comply with the new regulations.

Late last year, the Labour Ministry gave illegal foreign workers 10 days to apply for work permits.

Mr. Charles says there has been a significant increase in work permit applications and renewals since then.
