House Speaker to provide update on Tivoli report
Speaker of the House or Representatives Michael Peart will today outline what steps are being taken to help the Public Defender to complete the long-delayed report into the 2010 West Kingston incursion.
Peart had promised to provide those details last week following a meeting with the Public Defender and staff at the House of Parliament.
However, speaking with our news centre last night he said that statement would be released to the media and the public today.
Public Defender Earl Witter has come under renewed criticism over his failure to furnish a report into the joint police-military operation in Tivoli Gardens almost three years after the incident.
There have been calls for Witter to resign.
However, he has stressed that serious resource challenges are impeding his ability to produce the report.
The Office of the Public Defender had launched a probe into hundreds of complaints by residents, who accused the security forces of abuses, extrajudicial killings and deliberately destroying their houses and businesses.
More than 70 persons were killed in the operation.
The operation was aimed at executing an arrest warrant on then fugitive and west Kingston druglord Christopher “Dudus” Coke.
