Puerto Rico elects new governor

The people of Puerto Rico have elected a new governor.

Luis Fortuno of the pro-statehood New Progressive Party yesterday defeated incumbent Anibal Acevedo Vila.

The governor-elect took a strong lead in early returns and held it until Acevedo Vila conceded the race four hours after the polls closed.

Acevedo Vila had urged Puerto Ricans to support him despite several charges related to alleged campaign finance violations.

The new governor’s party wants the island to become the 51st US state.

Puerto Ricans are US citizens but do not vote in presidential elections.
