Police high command says Westmoreland-based Alma Gang dismantled
The Area One Police have declared that the Westmoreland-based Alma Gang which is blamed for most of the violence in the parish has been dismantled.
Area One includes St James, Westmoreland, Hanover and Trelawny and is under the command of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Warren Clarke.
Speaking at a press conference in Montego Bay this afternoon, ACP Clarke said the gang, which built its reputation on robbery, rape, murder and extortion, is now inactive.
He said 13 members of the gang have either been arrested or shot and killed in confrontations with the police.
ACP Clarke noted that in operations against the gang, the police have seized some 13 high-powered weapons.
The criminal organisation came to prominence in 2008 and reportedly grew deadly under the leadership of Torniel ‘Malta’ Haughton.
Haughton, who was wanted for several murders, was shot and killed in an alleged confrontation with the Westmoreland police on New Year’s Eve.
In addition to the Alma Gang, ACP Clarke said the police have had much success in dealing with gangsters in the other western parishes.
ACP Clarke said in recent times, 115 gangsters have been arrested while there have been 53 fatal shootings.
He added that several persons have surrendered to the police without incident.
