AUDIO: Hair tax proposal gets some support

Published:Friday | January 10, 2014

KINGSTON, Jamaica:

A recommendation that the Government impose a higher import tax on beauty products like hair, nails, bleaching creams and eyelashes as it seeks to rake in more money is receiving support in some quarters.

This year, it is projected that Jamaica will spend more than $1 billion to import the products.

Yesterday businesswoman Yaneek Page said an imposition of a higher import tax on these products may drive up their prices and reduce demand.

A canvass of the views on the matter in downtown Kingston yesterday revealed that there is some support for the move under certain conditions.

One hairdresser said a tax could be imposed if the Government also provided skills training for persons in the cosmetology industry.

Others felt a tax on such items would be more acceptable than on essentials such as food.

However, there were others who opposed the idea.
