JLP calls press conference over death of Mario Deane
The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has called a press conference for tomorrow over the death in custody of Mario Deane in St James last week.
A media release from the Opposition JLP today notes that the press conference is to be headed by Opposition Leader Andrew Holness, spokesperson on National Security Derrick Smith and the party’s parliamentary representatives from St James.
The police claim 31-year-old Deane was beaten by other prisoners last Sunday while he was being held for possession of a ganja spliff.
But the family of Deane has claimed that doctors told them that the police initially said Deane fell from a bunk bed.
Deane, who suffered multiple brain injuries along with other head and facial damage, died last Wednesday at hospital.
