NDM condemns Gov't/Opposition for 'using' Mario Deane issue

Published:Tuesday | August 12, 2014 | 12:47 PM

The National Democratic Movement (NDM) is condemning the Government and the Opposition, for what it calls their hypocritical, self-serving statements on the Mario Deane matter.

NDM chairman, Peter Townsend, says State abuses date back to the politically motivated 1976 State of Emergency and laws which gave the security forces sweeping power to use against citizens.

The NDM says the issue involving Mario Deane is beyond one about a ‘ganja’ spliff.

According to Townsend, the real issue is the continued police excesses and an abusive, uncaring culture practised by successive governments.
